FAQs

  • How do I know if my roof needs a repair?

While a leak, missing shingles or roofing that’s become dislodged is fairly easy to spot, other forms of deterioration may be more difficult to distinguish. Initially, we suggest getting your roof inspected by a professional. If you haven’t had a professional roof inspection within the past five years, it’s probably time to get someone who knows what they’re doing up a ladder and onto your roof for a good look.

In between professional inspections, there are a number of signs to look out for that could require further investigation.

        • Wrinkles or folds on the fabric of the roof.

        • Discolouration.

        • Pools of water.

        • Flooded downpipes or eavestroughs that are blocked, loose or damaged.

        • Cracks

        • Weakness in the joints and/or flashing.

        • Sagging, bowing or an uneven roofline.

        • Issues with the soffits and/or fascias.

        • Difficulty in opening a skylight that previously opened easily (this may be due to problems with the skylight frame, but may also be caused by the roof shifting slightly, creating an uneven force on the skylight frame that distorts it).

If in doubt, call us out to inspect the roof and let you know if any work is required.

  • Is it better to get the roof replaced, rather than repaired?

There is no single answer to this question, as it depends on everything from the age and overall condition of the roof through to the type of repair that’s needed, the type of property, long-term plans for the property and any other underlying issues that may make an upgrade a more attractive proposition.

In many cases, a problem that’s caused by an unusual force or trauma (for example an extraordinarily hard gust of wind during a storm) can be easily repaired if the problem is caught promptly. It’s unlikely the issue has been caused by an overall deterioration in roof quality, and fast fixing will reduce the risk of complications such as interior dampness and structural decay.

If a repair has been neglected for a considerable period of time, it will likely have had a knock-on effect on other parts of the roof, as well as on the structures around and beneath the compromised area. If widespread roof weakness is detected, or if multiple repairs have been needed within a short space of time, total replacement is probably going to be more cost-effective.

AAA Roofmasters Ltd. will recommend either a repair or replacement, depending on your roof’s individual circumstances.

  • How long does a roof repair take?

Obviously, the length of time we need to repair a roof depends on the nature of the property and the repair. Whilst small repairs on an easily accessible roof may take just a few hours, in other situations, we would need to erect scaffolding, order in fresh materials and use a large workforce over several days or weeks to get the job completed satisfactorily.

Because timescales vary so much, we usually provide a timeline that’s customized to the needs of each project. When you call us and ask us to assess the job, we’ll work out how long it’s likely to take us to resolve the issue and let you know at the same time as providing our recommendations and no-obligation quote. If you want the job done faster (or conversely want to wait until a more convenient time), we will negotiate a suitable start date and timetable to fit with your requirements.

We have significant capacity within the company, which enables us to meet tight deadlines with ease.

  • I have a new roof - why is it leaking?

If you’ve had a new roof installed in the last five to ten years, or have moved into a new-build property, the last thing you expect to discover is a drip from the ceiling during a rainstorm!

Unfortunately, this is an all too common scenario. If this has happened to you, it’s important to seek professional assistance to resolve the problem.

Given the age of the roof, it’s unlikely that the problem is going to be due to wear and tear unless sub-standard materials were used.

Poor installation can often give rise to leaks – parts of the roof may become loosened or detached, or water pooling may put too much stress on some roof areas.

In addition, a recent storm may have wrenched part of the roof free or caused a shingle to fall off, creating the leak. Remember that the position of the leak indoors may not be the same as the position on the roof – water takes the path of least resistance, rather than always travelling directly downwards.

Give us a call for a professional assessment, explanation and solution to the problem you’re experiencing. In most cases, we can provide an inexpensive and effective repair.
